Let's consider two scenarios when you may want to recover your work: (1) You are working on a new file and have never saved the file at all; or (2) your previously saved file closes before you can save the changes made since your last save. Either way, your files may be recoverable but would be recovered in different ways.
Recovering a never-before-saved file
- Open Microsoft Excel/Microsoft Word.
- Select the 'File' tab on your ribbon.
- Click 'Open'.
- Click 'Recent' and then scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'Recover Unsaved Workbooks' (see the screen shot below).

5. The open window will appear (see the screen shot below). Select the unsaved file you wish to recover.

Recovering a previously saved version of a file
- Open Excel/Word.
- Open the file that you were working on.
- Click the file name / last modified time at the top of the page (next to the 'AutoSave' toggle switch).

4. Click 'Version History.'

5. Select the version that you wish to restore.
